John has been teaching mathematics at Highland Park Senior and Junior High Schools since 1971. He also teaches Computer Programming and Driver's Education.

During his career, John has also had the opportunity to work with gifted students. He taught gifted students at Macalester College's Twin City Institute for Talented Youth from 1985-1995. John has been a coach in the Math League since 1981 and has participated in and taught in the International Baccalaureate Program at Highland Park Senior High School since 1993.

In 2006, John was elected to and currently serves as President of the Board of Trustees.

John's involvement in Union and Retirement programs has been extensive. He has served as:

  • Building steward at Highland Park since 1982
  • Treasurer for the Committee of Nine from 1990 to 1992
  • Chairperson of the Committee of Nine from 2003 to 2006
  • Treasurer and trustee for the AFT Local 28 Scholarship Fund from 1987-1997, and Chairperson since 1998.
  • Trustee of the St. Paul Teachers' Retirement Fund Association since 1992
  • Inducted in the Minnesota State Math League's Hall of Fame for his 25 years of Math Team coaching and leading many teams to the State Math Tournament, winning it in 1988 and 2002.
  • 2007 winner of the William E. Gardner PreK-12 Outstanding Educator Award from the University of Minnesota's College of Education and Human Development Alumni Society – April 13, 2007.

John has received certificates issued by the National Council on Teacher Retirement (NCTR):
