The active membership of SPTRFA includes members who are presently
employed in positions covered by SPTRFA as well as members who are no
longer employed in a position covered by SPTRFA but still have
contributions and service credit with SPTRFA.
Basic Plan members are those hired by the St. Paul Public
Schools prior to July 1, 1978, with no breaks in service and
those who did not elect to join the Coordinated Plan in 1978.
The Basic Plan is a defined benefit plan.
Coordinated Plan members are those members who have benefits
from both Social Security and SPTRFA. These members
include all members hired after June 30, 1978, as well as those
hired prior to that date who elected to join the Coordinated
Plan. The Coordinated Plan is a defined benefit
plan.
